Quick Writing Tips

Yesderday I had the honor of participating on a panel discussion for the Rising Writers Workshop hosted by Write by the Rails (my local writers group) and Woodbridge High School's Creative Writing Program. I have to say, of all the panels I've been invited to participate on in the past, this was the most fun.

My fellow panelists were amazing and brought a lot of publishing experience to the table. That's me, second from left!

With an audience of approximately 40 eager teenage writers, I wrote up a few tips on writing to pass out. For those interested, here's the short version:

1. There is no such thing as an aspiring writer. You either write or you don't.

2. Write what you love, what you're interested in, and/or curious about.

3. Self-editing is part of the writing process. Don't be afraid to delete!

4. There are many routes to NYC...Everyone's path to writing (publishing) is different.

5. It's okay to break the rules, but you have to understand the rules first.

6. Not everyone is going to love your work (and that's okay)!

7. READ. But it's not enough to just read...learn from what you've read.

8. Luck plays a role. But you can meet fate halfway by working hard. You can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket!

9. Be patient! It really is a marathon not a sprint.

10. There is only one true rule: WRITE.
